Artist Biography

Scarlett Yang is an artist and design researcher whose work explores the intersections of ecology, material intelligence, and technological speculation.

Her practice investigates how marine ecologies and natural materials embody narratives of climate change, ecosystem health, and biological memory. Through collaborative research with scientists, technologists, and creative communities, she develops new frameworks for understanding how materials can act as dynamic carriers of environmental data.

She is the recipient of multiple awards such as the LVMH Green Trail Award and her work has been collected by institutions such as the Wereldmuseum (NL).

Scarlett’s exhibitions include at the V&A Museum, Somerset House, Center for Heritage, Arts and Textiles and London Design Biennale. Her cross-disciplinary approach has attracted media attention from outlets like Financial Times, Vogue, and Wallpaper*

Scarlett’s recent projects explore topics including ocean ecologies, aquaculture health, circular material systems, and participatory visualisation of environmental change. Her current research expands from previous investigations into algae-based biomaterials to new studies on oyster shell and Mother of Pearl, exploring their potential as living archives of marine ecosystems and as public storytelling tools within broader debates on planetary futures.
